It is….

Embodies fragments of ideas, memories and responses to events and my experiences during COVID. Experiencing uncertainty and being confined, I found myself taking photographs of objects that I collect and how they were arranged. Memory based or collected for their symbolism; photographs of these objects came to represent the myriad of feelings I was experiencing. I chose wet plate collodion rather than traditional back and white materials, printing on Mica, a mineral used as a heat shield and electrical insulator and to add shimmer to cosmetics. I liked the idea of Mica metaphorically representing contemporary times. Mica’s use in creating cosmetic shimmer, covering and distracting from what it conceals, and as a heat shield with the ability to shield and insulate from troubling events, seemed to define my ideas. The photographs were taken beginning in March 2020, initially without a purpose but eventually representing the uncertainty and lack of direction that I was feeling. With each image on a material with contrasting uses and with unpredictable results of where or how the chemicals would appear in the different layers, the images begin to represent the emotional roller coaster that we have collectivity experienced and our inability to control some things. It is, what it is….

This series consists of Collodion images on Mica on black PVC and mounted with silver wire. Each image is unique.
